Activating Probate Plus with your HASP key (PPv4)

N.B. This article is no longer relevant to new purchasers of Probate Plus as a HASP key is no longer essential to store your 'pay-as-you-go' units. It has been replaced by our new CloudLM system.

You may have previously installed Probate Plus in its "evaluation mode". This is the usual first step taken by practitioners who want to try out the system before buying. But once you've decided you'd like to use the system to handle a live matter then you'll need to purchase a full licence.

Once you've purchased what we call our "Starter Pack" you will be sent a HASP key - this is a hardware "key" (also known as a dongle) which slots into a free USB port. This can be on your own PC, a networked computer or an office server. The proviso being that any computer using Probate Plus in your office will need to be able to communicate with the HASP key across your network. The HASP contains your licence to use Probate Plus and stores a record of the number of pay-as-you-go units you have in stock.

There are two main scenarios when installing the HASP - local or network.

1. HASP local on your PC only.

  • If you're the only user of Probate Plus, simply plug the HASP into a free USB port on your PC. When Windows has detected the HASP it should start glowing bright red. If Windows doesn't detect the HASP you can manually install the device drivers from this page : http://www.lawsystems.co.uk/pp_wp/downloads/#HASP
  • Next, start Probate Plus.
  • Select the menu item "Options..Registration details".
  • Click the button "HASP Licence Manager" in the dialog box.
  • Close the registration windows and restart Probate Plus.
  • Upon restart, Probate Plus will attempt to search for your HASP and, if successful, will start in "full" mode rather than "evaluation".

2. Network the HASP (on a PC or server) so that all Probate Plus users can connect to it.

The HASP is again plugged into a PC or server on your network (this could of course be your own PC). The thing to remember is that the HASP needs to be on a PC that is normally switched on when other users want to use Probate Plus in order for the HASP to be found.

  • Connect the HASP to the PC or server that will be hosting the HASP, Windows should detect and install the HASP, the HASP may glow bright red when connected.
  • Download and install the HASP Server application from http://www.lawsystems.co.uk/pp_wp/downloads/#HASP
  • Go to any workstation that has Probate Plus installed and is on the same subnet as the machine hosting the HASP and open Probate Plus.
A window should pop-up showing when Probate Plus is searching for the HASP.

NB : There is no need to carry out the "Options..Registration details" on all PCs, just one and the setting is automatically sent to all Probate Plus workstations the next time they try to connect.

NOTES :

If you have to download the HASP licence manager from http://www.lawsystems.co.uk/pp_wp/downloads/#HASP save the zipped folder on the same machine as the HASP, then unzip that folder and look for the file called lmsetup.exe  Run this file by clicking on it. This should start the process for letting the HASP talk to all the other machines on your network.

Sometimes on networks, installing the HASP may need extra configuration and tuning to your network topology such as multiple subnets, firewalls, intrusion detection software. Please create a support ticket (above) if you need further assistance.
